Esopo dijo que era el burro está inspirado en las fábulas de Esopo -lo que se infiere desde la lectura del título-, recreadas muy libremente por Triunfo Arciniegas, quien narra las aventuras y desventuras de un personaje central en estas fábulas: el burro, aunque también entran en juego otros personajes como el león y la flauta. A través de cinco relatos, Arciniegas logra armar con maestría una historia donde el personaje del burro atraviesa por una serie de circunstancias a ratos adversas y, a ratos, divertidas.
